Measuring extensive air showers with Cherenkov light detectors of the Yakutsk array: The energy spectrum of cosmic rays
نویسنده
چکیده
The energy spectrum of cosmic rays in the range E ∼ 1015 eV to 6 × 1019 eV has been studied using the air Cherenkov light detectors of the Yakutsk array. The total flux of photons produced by relativistic electrons (including positrons as well, hereafter) of extensive air showers in the atmosphere is used as the energy estimator of the primary particle initiating a shower. The resultant differential flux of cosmic rays exhibits, in accordance with previous measurements, a knee and ankle features at energies 3 × 1015 and ∼ 1019 eV, respectively. A comparison of observational data with simulations is made in the knee and ankle regions in order to choose the models of galactic and extragalactic components of cosmic rays which describe better the energy spectrum measured. A study on the lateral distribution of Cherenkov light in extensive air showers
The dependence of the lateral distribution of Cherenkov light in simulated extensive air showers to the energy and the mass of the primary cosmic rays has been studied. It has been shown that a previous claim about mass independent proportionality of shower energy to the total Cherenkov photon number is not valid in energies below EEAS ~ 1014 eV. We have found that the core distance of the so c...

Alborz observatory is an EAS array in the heights of Alborez mountain chain near Tehran. For the development of the array, more number of detectors is inevitable. The managing the financial resources and achieving the highest efficiency of the array is important for the project. Therefore, Water Cherenkov Detectors has been used for 9 months in the same way as the previous experiment with Scint...

متن کاملMuon content of ultra-high-energy air showers: Yakutsk data versus simulations
We analyse a sample of 33 extensive air showers (EAS) with estimated primary energies above 2·1019 eV and high-quality muon data recorded by the Yakutsk EAS array. We compare, event-by-event, the observed muon density to that expected from CORSIKA simulations for primary protons and iron, using SIBYLL and EPOS hadronic interaction models. The study suggests the presence of two distinct hadronic...
متن کاملA New Method to Reconstruct the Energy and Determine the Composition of Cosmic Rays from the Measurement of Cherenkov Light and Particle Densities in Extensive Air Showers
AMonte-Carlo study to reconstruct energy and mass of cosmic rays with energies above 300TeV using ground based measurements of the electromagnetic part of showers initiated in the atmosphere is presented. The shower properties determined with two detector arrays measuring the air Cherenkov light and the particle densities as realized at the HEGRA experiment are processed to determine the energy...
